Sino-UK Symposium on Nutrients Management and Low-Carbon Agricultural held in Xian, China

Sino-UK Symposium on Nutrient Management and Low-Carbon Agricultural was held by Low-Carbon Agricultural Project (SAIN WG1) in Xian, China on 4th July 2011. The representatives at the meeting from Rothamsted, London University, University of East Anglia, North Wyke Research of UK side, Center for Chinese Agricultural Policy (CCAP), Chinese Agriculture University, Northwest A&F University, Shaanxi Development and Reform Commission, Shaanxi Agriculture Bureau, Shaanxi Environmental Protection Bureau and Gansu Agriculture Bureau. Leaders and members of project group about 30 people attended the conference, discussed and improved together on nutrient management and development of low-carbon economy. The conference was chaired by the Chinese project host, Professor Zhang Fusuo.

Sun Guifeng, consultant of Division of International Cooperation of China Agriculture Ministry, John Warburto, a British Bmbassy official, and Wu Pute, vice president of Northwest A&F University attended the opening ceremony and made speeches. Sun affirmed the project achievements on quantitative of greenhouse gas from nitrogen fertilizers, and has set higher demands for promoting progress of fertilizer technology and grain production.

At the meeting, Shaanxi experts introduced developments of ecosystem environment condition in Shaanxi, crop distribution, energy conservation and pollution reduction targets and fertilizer application and management. Expert groups undertook extensive and thorough discussion around manufacturing techniques and fertilizer application of main crops in loess plateau, such as wheat, maize, vegetable and fruiter. Communicate seriously by personnel attending the meeting about soil and water conservation, sustainable agriculture, water saving technology and soil N transformation in dry-land.

This symposium not only provide the theoretical guideline for rational application of N fertilizer of main crops in northwest China, but also has laid foundation for the study and application of energy conservation and pollution reduction targets and sustainable agriculture.
